on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Amanda sent me a text with an urgent request: bring a carrier and a Snuggle Safe (a heat source) to her school. When I arrived, she led me to the reason why—three tiny squirrels in desperate need of help

This isn’t the first time we’ve rescued squirrels. The last time was back at our old house when baby squirrels managed to climb up Iris’s legs! But this time, the situation was even more dire.

Most people would have walked away and let nature take its course, but we couldn’t ignore their tiny, helpless bodies—we had to step in and give them a chance.

A Desperate Situation

The baby squirrels were found at the base of a towering tree, probably a couple hundred feet tall. When Amanda showed them to me, they were nearly motionless—clearly dehydrated, weak, and lethargic. Who knows how long they had been out of the nest? At only 90 grams, they were far too small to make the climb back up on their own.

I dropped off the carrier and supplies, hoping they’d have a fighting chance. But the story didn’t end there.

A Fourth Baby and a New Journey

Later that day, Amanda discovered a fourth baby squirrel! With the full group in tow and our daughter Betty, they made the drive out to Woodland Hills to take them to our friends at Squirrelmenders Rescue—the same incredible organization that helped us last time. This time, a different foster took them in, ensuring they’d receive the round-the-clock care they needed.

What Happens Next?

Now, our part of the rescue ends. The squirrels are in safe hands, where they’ll be nurtured until they’re strong enough to move to a sanctuary. Sadly, we likely won’t get any updates, but we know they’re getting the best possible care.

This is exactly the kind of rescue work we fundraise for during kitten season, though we never expected to be helping anything other than cats! Rescues like this take time, resources, and funding. If you want to support more life-saving efforts—whether for kittens, squirrels, or whatever creature needs us next—please consider donating to our Tiltify fundraiser at:
